Radeon Driver help

I am running version 2.6.31-22-generic kernel, which is the latest I see 
under synaptic. Would a later distribution use a different kernel? I had 
assumed that the latest kernels were applied during an update. Please 
advise if I am incorrect. Version 2.3.37 is the latest at kernel.org.
