Can the "AMD Turion 64-X2" processor run 64 bit Ubuntu?

I am running 2 gigs of memory and 64 bit actually seemed slower,
especially with java applications. Sure, there are hooks to enable, but
it was all-in-all too much hassle for me, out-of-the-box, even as an old
