Does ubuntu has intel 1G/bits wire Ethernet driver?

Sorry, obviously I've gotten my memory mixed up, thanks for the 
correction.. (you are correct that ethtool should be used for GB cards)...

I only checked on my "lucid" system that mii-tool was installed by 
default but not ethtool, but should have verified that.
