I would stand corrected, but it is my understanding that this is the
only mailing list for user support and we can make no assumptions about
the level of technical expertise of the user except the clues given in
the question. So I will always start with the standard GUI tools if
there is no indications to the contrary.
In particular, it seems that the Ubuntu Software Centre is almost
completely ignored on this list, which is a shame as some much effort
has gone into it. It even provides the answer sometimes - see the
thread on Can't read PDF.
