Actually, the Russian "Vasilij" derives from the Greek "basileos,"
'ruler,', i. e., the theological concept of Christ the King. I think it
is an early Christian name, but I don't know when it was first noted in
history. The English "Basil" derives directly from the Greek without
detouring through Russia.
