Install Issues

I've been trying to install both Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 on my PC for
the past couple of days. This is a custom built system that a friend
of mine built 5 years ago. He gave it to me. It was a gaming system
when he initially built it, using Bleeding Edge components.
It has an AMD Athlon 64x2 4800+ CPU
2GB of RAM
Two 16x PCI-E Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX cards in SLI-Mode
An Audigy sound card.
Two 100GB hard drives in hardware RAID mode.
I get errors about the CPU when the installer tries to start. One of
the errors is No Human Readable MCE data, or something or other.
The kernel looks like it is looking for some kind of CPU feature that
either my CPU doesn't have or it can't find it. The installer ends
with a kernel panic and isn't able to continue. I want to dual boot
Ubuntu and Windows. My intention is to test my game software under the
latest version of WINE to see if I can finally make the switch to
Linux completely and leave Windows behind. Only, this problem is
getting in the way of that.
Running Windows XP, this system doesn't have any issues. I used to be
a very cantankerous machine when my friend built it, but after it was
rebuilt and I took it over its been working superbly.
Any advice?
