Thanks for responding, but my attempt at brevity left out the obvious,
namely that I'm already running a fully updated 10.10 on all machines.
Since my post I've managed to get do-release-upgrade working - I had
assumed that a root terminal would be functionally equivalent to sudo in
a user terminal, but alas not. It's working just fine since I closed
root and tried again via sudo in a user terminal! There must be a
contextual element somewhere.
The original problem still stands, namely that the upgrade cannot be
performed via Update Manager. As this potentially affects other users it
would be useful to understand the cause.
