Fresh install over old installation

Hello,
I want to upgrade to UBUNTU 11.04, but face a dilemma: Either format all
existing partitions, or keep some as is and install on top of them.
My configuration is as follows:
/ - 10 Gbyte
/boot - 500 Mbyte
/home - 250 Gbyte (of course not going to reformat this one)
/var - 50 Gbyte (hardly used)
/usr - 30 Gbyte
I have quite a few of additional applications installed.
So the question is should I reformat /, /boot, /var and /usr during the
install ? And what are the most important consequences if I do and if I dont
?
Thanks,
