For grub2, "sudo apt-get remove --purge 2.6.35-27-*" will regenerate the
grub.cfg leaving out the purged kernels. No need to manually edit.
As for grub-legacy, there *should* also be no need to manually edit and
the menu.lst should also regenerate, *however*, especially with more
than one disk or with external disks, the generation of menu.lst is not
so reliable, sometimes requiring the need to manually edit the menu.lst.
To be fair, I have (rarely) seen errors (in /dev/sdx and (hd)x,y) )in
the generation of grub.cfg in grub2 too, but the stanza
"search...--set..." and the use of uuid always overide the errors giving
correct boots.
I still don't understand why people think grub-legacy is better. Ah, well.
