Why is everyone telling the OP to re-install, etc?

As far as I know (and have done myself) all he needs to do if he has the
Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 version of Ubuntu Netbook is to get to the login
screen, select his login, go to the Sessions menu at the bottom of the
screen and select GNOME. Job done.  He will have the the desktop version
of Ubuntu running.
