Hey guys,

I'm one of the founders of quippd, a social news network with some nifty
ideas based around community. Like other news sites like Digg, we allow
users to vote on stories and follow other users (like on Twitter).

http://quippd.com/

However, we do something interesting -- stories can optionally be edited,
like a wiki (you guys know wikis, right?) so that stories become continually
evolving sources of good information.

We build quippd on Ubuntu, and we would like nothing better than to have our
fellow Ubuntu users on board with us.

You can login using OpenID and we're looking into integrating OStatus so
that you can follow people on Status.net implementations.

I hope you guys check us out, and please reply to this email for any
questions or comments!

Please keep us posted on how helpful it is to clear your HD. As a
general rule, the problem with Windows is that it always overwrites the
MBR with it's own. I've never yet heard of a Windows install failing
because old bootloader was left unmolested. Unless something very
strange is happening, your problem installing Windows XP is likely
caused by hardware/driver issues.

Just to finalise - removed the MBR and the problem disappeared.

For me using computer in home comes with 2 options - either use it
with a pirated copy of Windows XP or use linux instead. In the
beginning I choose the first option and plagued with Million types of
VIRUSES and monthly formatting of hard disk. Last year I have decided
to use HAMMER to get rid of VIRUSES and before doing so I thought give
linux a try ( about which all my friends and else have told me that
only computer scientists can run a linux and not an end user like me -
primarily because linux only comes with CLI and not with a Graphical
User Interface and I have to take a certificate course to learn those
"COMMANDS").
Then I myself Installed UBUNTU 9.04 using a MOUSE and rather getting
rid of viruses, I actually get rid of the Windows partition itself.
Since then I am using linux in my PC WITHOUT any " NOT SO USERS
FRIENDLY" problems (Actually, I don't realise what all these fuss
about "USERS FRIENDLINESS" are).

This August I have installed Fdora 13 and really likes it with its
various security tools and the command line software install package -
YUM and one of its plug-ins PRESTO( which reduced the size of
downloadable software considerably). I am still exploring Fedora
13(More true Linux than Ubuntu???) and I'm lovin it.
Fedora13 rocks.

Once due to loose power cable my desktop gets halted accidentally and
starting it, shows some error message and it can't boot the system. I
use the Ubuntu Live-cd and use the gparted partition editor to check
and repair the hard disk/partition. After it completes the operation I
restart the computer and usually log in to my ubuntu system.

I'd like to run Ubuntu with dual boot to an existing Mandriva 2008
using ext3. Each will be on its own HD. Ubuntu apparently wants to
format with ext4. Google info seems to indicate that, under certain
conditions, ext4 can't be used with, or even seen by, an ext3 system.
Will I be able to mount an ext4 partition from a running Mandrive/ext3
and do reads/writes to the ext4 with no problem?

I realize ext4 is backward compatible, but I prefer to be able to work
in both directions as needed.

If this will be a problem, is it possible to install Ubuntu so it
formats with ext3? I didn't see mention of that option in the install
documentation.

Thanks,

 rikona

ext4 is just the default. You could install Ubuntu on ext3 and you'll be fine.

Cheers,
Al.

According to distrowatch, EXT4 support was not added to Mandriva until
the 2009.1 version. If you want 2008 Mandriva to read/write to your
Ubuntu Hard drive, format that drive as Ext3 rather than ext4.

Last time I tried to remove the battery from a live Android device (HTC
Desire), I trashed my SD card. Not funny :(

It's not OT as long as you mention UNIX. I haven't read anyone post that
he was having problems with a SOROC terminal and the backspace key
settings using setserial. It's been awhile. I wish we had a 16bit
version of Linux to replace DRDOS though. <sighs wistfully, too> Ric
