Dunno if this has already been suggested, but there is a little widget
you can add to the GNOME task bar called "Character Palette". Add it to
the task bar, right-click on it, select "add", and in the dialogue that
appears, type Ctrl-Shift-U, then 03c0, then press space. A pi symbol
will appear. Now click "Close".

Now click on the widget (it's a little down-arrow, looks like a "v") and
click the radio button for your new character palette. The pi symbol
will appear beside the little down arrow in the task bar.

To insert the character wherever you need it, just click on it in the
task bar, then insert it using CTL-V or by middle-clicking (depends on
the app). I've used this method in a very wide range of apps, though I'm
sure there are some where it doesn't work.

Worth a try, maybe? I have a collection of characters I use a lot, saves
having to remember the Unicode all the time.

Regards, K.

PS: Works in gnome-terminal, OpenOffice, vi....

PPS: Directly typing CTRL-Shift-U, then 03c0, then enter works in
gnome-terminal too. Dunno why it didn't for you, Joep... have you maybe
reserved CTRL-Shift-U for something like a Compiz trigger key?
