Strange CD drive problem

Hi,
have just installed 10.04  on a friends machine. Machine had win7
did an install using complete hard drive , but when up and running, 
shows there
to be a CD already in the drive . Double clicking phantom cd icon show 
the contents to be a
number of windows executables (Blue diamonds). Ejecting the CD removes 
the icon, but when cd
tray closes, the icon re-appears. When another cd is placed in the tray 
it can be accessed,
but when removed the phantom CD re-appears when the empty tray closes.

Any ideas as to why this is happening, and how to permanently remove it
would be greatly appreciated.
