1. If you haven't already, install gparted (Synaptic Package Manager)

2. Plugin the USB stick - it will show as being recognised and the File 
Manager will open displaying the USB's contents

3. Because you cannot format a mounted device, UNMOUNT the USB stick 
from within the File Manager

4. Run gparted, select the USB stick, format it with ext4
