I was not referring to a different program, just different selections
as you have tried. If it fails with the blank screen then it is not
what I was suggesting.
I am probably out of my depth here, but have you looked in the xorg
log (/var/log/Xorg.*) to see if there is anything there? Not sure
which Xorg file you will have to look in, check the file timestamps.
Someone else may be able to give better suggestions on exactly what to
look for.
