You may also like guvcview if the camera is uvc:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/pt/lucid/graphics/guvcview
$ sudo apt-get install guvcview
then
Applications|Sound & Video|guvcview
I've found that guvcview provides better controls/results than cheese
(for me).
