I just use Brasero.

I insert the dvd (commercial movie dvd) and am prompted run in Movie
Player. Instead, I select Brasero from the dropdown & use that. Works
just fine (for me). To test the iso I just bring up Movie Player (Totem)
and open & play the iso. Keep in mind that the iso will typically be
over 4Gb and not fit on a standard single layer dvd. So, you'll need to
use dvd95, dvdrip etc., to reduce/compress if that is your goal.
