mysql server on 10.04 UNR

I installed mysql 5 from the repo on my UNR 10.04 box.
For some reason, sudo service start mysql just sits with a blinking cursor.
Is there any known defect with mysql-server 5 ? If not, I can uninstall it
and then reinstall it (in the off chance I borked something during the
installation).

Any input as always, is appreciated.
