upgrading to a new release?

Yes, you can but it is not a LTS release like 10.04 is or 8.04 was.  This 
laptop was updated directly from the last LTS version (8.04) to 10.04.  Had I 
have gone the other way I would have had to go to 8.10, 9.04, 9.10,and then 
finally to 10.04 and now be thinking about 10.10.  10.04 will be supported for 
a much longer time than 10.10 or even 11.04 will be.
