I have been using Linux since RedHat 5.2 and can honestly say that I've
never seen a Linux machine infected by a virus.  I've heard that they
exist, and I have no reason to believe that they don't.  However, I find
it hard to believe that the man whom you are referencing was being
honest about having had two infections in the last year.

It's just not something that I worry about, and I doubt that you should
either.  As Linux becomes more widely adopted it may become more of an
issue, though.
