sound icon/network manager missing

The sound icon/network manager/battery indicator missing on my 10.10
netbook installation.  The noticification applet is there.  I removed
it and added it.  In startup applications Network Manager is checked.
Anyone have any other suggestions?  In my other user everything is
fine.  A while ago after I added the applet, the battery and only the
battery icon appeared, when I deleted the applet and put it back, the
battery disappeared.
