I think that flies against conventional wisdom that those in need of
help search first, just so the list doesn't have to answer the same
problem 6 times a week. There is that... :) Ric

Well, I do, but I don't tell people about it. Then they would be bugging
me for details of their past-lives, etc and it gets old. :) Ric

The culprit is usually the server name, example : my company's sever name is
made public as geo.domain.name.com but in truth the server name is a string of
alpha-num chars separated by periods something like a7cd.1mnq.x3yz.com

So just make sure you are entering the right one. and to be sure
have a look at your OWA in these places

Try opening Nautilus, then Edit|Preferences|Media|Photos: Ask me what to
do. It wasn't clear if you'd already done that, or just used the popup
to set 'ask me'.

Yes, if you brainlessly follow the first link that comes up instead of
searching a bit, try to understand and make up your mind.

That's the difference between learning and parroting. Nothing is your
friend, if you're dumb enough. :)

This is partly a rant (sorry, need to let this out) and partly a question.

Following the fact that it's quite difficult to get a scanner to work with 64
bit Linux when it (unfortunately) requires a closed source 32bit driver, I've
decided to migrate my installation to a larger partition (on the same
computer).

I've done it as I usually do, by copying the installation from one partition
to another, in this case / went from sda6 to sda1 and /home from sda7 to sda2
(using cp -r -v --preserve --no-dereference). No problem.

I then edited /etc/fstab on the new root. Normaly, I would have
edited /boot/grub/menu.lst but... we now have grub 2.

First try: no luck. Grub fails with: Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/<some long and
impossible to understand stuipd uuid>

************Rant 1****************************
they say they must use uuid's because "if partition order changes one can not
boot anymore". Well, when does partition order change without the user doing
it? And it's easy to correct with /dev/sdx, not with uuid! And if you clone
your disk _nothing_ works at all because _all_ uuid's change! Great! Now even
when the partition order did not change you can't boot anymore...
**********************************************

Now, luckily, I could still boot my old installation and search for
information as to how get grub 2 to find out about the new uuid if my root
partition, but I found none! update-grub did not do it. Grub 2 documentation
is as easy to read as the darkest night and they should really have created
tools to manage it before they use it as default boot loader.

After some time searching to no avail, I made another search that solved my
problem: uninstall grub 2, install grub legacy, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, and
voil?, everything works.

*************Rant 2**************************
Maybe Grub 2 has many more possibilities than Grub Legacy, for the moment and
with the current documentation, it mostly has more problems!
*******************************************

Now to the question: does anyone know how to do with grub 2 if you move your
system to another partition?

Thierry

It's spelled "kaput," Basil, not "kapoot."

Jeez.

<RBFG>

Glad your system is back - I hate it when my main machine does
anything bizarro like that. Since I put Linux on it almost 4 years
ago, it has lost a power supply and a video controller, but I have
also replaced all the disks (PATA -> SATA), the m/b twice (more power,
then on-board SATA-II), CPU (Athlon X2 -> faster X2 -> Athlon II X4)
and memory thrice (1GB -> 2GB -> 4GB) each, and both DVD writers. She
hums along quite comfortably these days.

Although this is not what you were asking about, have you considered
using [ab]* instead?

Your login shell (i. e. /bin/bash unless you manually changed that)
executes the command and does the file-name globbing beforehand.

Because it's bash again.

Now the script is effectively executed by /bin/sh, which, since Hardy
(IIRC), is not a symlink to /bin/bash anymore but to /bin/dash. And dash
doesn't understand most bashisms. That's why it doesn't behave the way
you expected.

Which is to be expected. finger -l prints, among other stuff, what is
configured to be the user's login shell. It doesn't tell you anything
about the process that started it.

> If, however, I put
> #!/bin/bash

Now again, the script will be run by bash, which, unlike dash, treats
{f*,l*} as a glob and replaces it with a list of matching file-names
before calling ls.
