Wow... things shouldn't be so hard, particularly when Realtek provide
linux drivers.

What do you show for locate r8192s_usb? On my 10.04 I show:

$ locate r8192s_usb
/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rtl8192su/r8192s_usb.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.32-25-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rtl8192su/r8192s_usb.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.32-26-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rtl8192su/r8192s_usb.ko

and

$ locate RTL8192
/lib/firmware/RTL8192E
/lib/firmware/RTL8192SE
/lib/firmware/RTL8192E/boot.img
/lib/firmware/RTL8192E/data.img
/lib/firmware/RTL8192E/main.img
/lib/firmware/RTL8192SE/rtl8192sfw.bin
/lib/firmware/RTL8192SE/rtl8192sfw492.bin
/lib/firmware/RTL8192SE/rtl8192sfw74.bin

$ md5sum /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE/rtl8192sfw.bin
