How to format and erase any partitions?

If you are sure you want to remove all partitions from a disk, you may run
$ sudo fdisk /dev/sdX
and select option "o", then "w" to write and exit

Note: o   create a new empty DOS partition table

At least, this is how I do it.

But, as Jordon said, that, and also create new partitions and format,
can be done during install
