USB error causes internet connection to drop

In trying to mount my kindle it actually causes my internet connection (wired) to drop. It has occurred on my desktop and laptop computer. Both are using Ubuntu 10.10. The drive mode does not mount at all but internet disconnects for some unknown reason. 

Both computers have all updates installed. Has there recently been an iffy USB driver update? Thanks
