Boot to recovery mode and select the dpkg option. Let that run and
correct any errors. Then continue to boot (I don't have a karmic in
front of me, but I think it is the top menu item) and log into the
console (your standard username & password). Then:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo fdisk -l
[post the output]
$ free
[post the output]
$ cat fstab
[post the output]
$ sudo blkid
[post the output]
$ sudo reboot now
[let the system reboot & see if it boots normally. If not, boot again to
recovery mode, continue to boot to the console, and:
$ sudo initramfs -k all -u
$ sudo reboot now
and see if that resolves the issue]
