WICD setup for Wireless connection...???

Hmm, maybe I should have mentioned that you can easily use the wicd 
package from the Ubuntu repositories, i.e. without adding software 
sources or the gpg key. Anyway, if you start wicd the first time you 
should get an icon in the panel and that icon should be there after a 
reboot as well. If you click on the icon you should get the wicd 
configuration window. And if you have checked the option to 
automatically connect to your network, you should get the network 
connection even without opening the wicd window. Maybe you just didn't 
notice the wicd icon in the panel?
