Failure to detect remote scanner...

I've got a small home network: one former desktop PC running 9.10
server edition, with 3 laptops and a netbook all running 9.10, either
standard or Netbook Remix. The former desktop functions as a file and
print server.  There are two printers attached to it, an HP Officejet
5610 all-in-one and an HP Deskjet 5940 - both are fine from any
machine on the network.

My wife's laptop is one of these machines and she needs to do a load
of scanning.  Testing the setup before she got to work I found that
Xsane reports the same error on all the laptops: no scanner detected.
If I run it from the server, it works fine.

So I have a simple solution to my wife's present need: sit her at my
desk and let her scan using the server.  But that is not satisfactory
long term.

I'd be grateful for any help.
