HP Photosmart B109a-m printer/scanner

I am trying Ubuntu 10.4 and have one major problem with it.

After downloading the HP packages from the repositories, I can get my HP 
Photosmart B109a-m to print. However, I just can't get it to scan. Xsane 
says that it can't find a scanner. The HP Toolbox doesn't work either - 
says that there is no printer connected!

Has anyone got a B109 to work fully?

If so, please would you tell me how you did it?

This is the only thing which is preventing me from installing 10.4.

Incidentally, my B109 didn't work with Ubuntu 9.10 either, so I had to 
abandon that version. I was hoping that the new version would have 
solved the problem and I could return to Ubuntu.
