Couple of thoughts since you may want to try and go to 10.04 eventually.

1st.  I know it looks to you like it was the torrents.  I'll 
respectfully suggest that may not be so.  It could be that the net card 
driver is flakey.  The reason you see it with torrents is because the 
torrents put the most stress on the system! 

2nd. IIRC, your card is an atheros.  In order to get mine working 
reliably, I needed to install the backports following the suggestion 
from here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1316126&highlight=AO532H

I don't know whether this applies to your card.  Also, I am on karmic 
still and have no idea why yours would be working better.  I have not 
tried the upgrade.

3rd. Keeping in mind 1 and 2, one of the reasons it may have been tough 
to find advice / solutions, is because you concluded that the torrents 
were breaking things.  While I understand that conclusion (and may have 
reached the same one) it is a good idea to broaden the scope of a search 
beyond the symptom.

Last.  My netbook is new, when I got it, we were a week away from the 
10.04 release.  I'm using karmic still and will be for at least another 
month.  Just a thought!
