Acer Aspire One Model ZG5 sound problems

I have installed 10.04 remix on Acer Aspire One Model ZG5 for a
friend.  We can not get the sound working.  Actually it worked at
first except for the mic in skype and she added everything she could
find on Synaptic that had to do with sound and installed it, then the
sound stopped working and the mic is still out as well.

Shall I have her remove everything to do with sound through synaptic
and then reinstall just Pulse?  And then what?

I did a google search on this topic and could not find anyone else
with a sound problem.
