On my laptop (for comaparison) I installed the gnome-applets package &
I click on the applet and can see the following options for my cpu:
2.10 Ghz
1.60 Ghz
1.20 Ghz
Conservative
OnDemand
Performance
Powersave
I select 'OnDemand' and I can see the freq go from 1.20 Ghz to 2.10 Ghz
depending upon which applications I am running.
So I've suggested that he try the same & we'll see if his processor does
the same (from 530Mhz to 1.8Ghz).
I suspect that it was merely a symptom of lshw reporting the state that
his cpu was in at the time & my inability to recognize that (PEBKAC on
my part). So I'll tag this as 'Resolved'.
The sluggish/slow-mo issues are more likely to be with his ATI graphics
card.
