Out of curiousity, did it show up properly in System -> Power Management?
The last couple of desktop UPSs I've installed show up there and work
'automagically' without me installing anything. The add-on software
is required for fancier network based stuff (send an email, handle
more than on computer on the same UPS etc) but I haven't needed it for
these cases.
