Thank you all for your help but all is well now (touch wookd). I did try
wicd and it did not remove NM. I have both running at the same time. Of
course that caused a bit of mayhem but it was fun as once I had the
ethernet on one and the wifi on the other. I did this just to
troubleshoot and went back to NM which I do prefer over wicd. I guess NM
is more tempermental but with some tweaking, it works well.
