Given that

avi at avi:~% apt-cache search java | wc -l
1050

That's probably not that useful. There's a lot of Java apps in the repos.

either
apt-cache search jre
or
apt-cache search jdk

are likely to be far more helpful, depending on whether he wants a 
runtime environment or a development kit.
