Let's start over (minus the added thread noise) & see if I have this
correct.

1. With 9.10 the system installed & works w/o issues.
2. Attempting to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 failed.
3. Attempting run the 10.04 liveCD results works.
4. Installing from 10.04 works, but on reboot you are getting a command
prompt rather than a desktop.

Is that correct?

Regarding your hardware, this shows that the system has an ATI:

http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=T6524
Video :  	ATI Radeon™® Xpress 200 (PCI-Express® )
Up to 128MB DDR shared video memory

There are issues in lucid (10.04) with that card - see:

When you get to the command prompt, try logging in with your username &
password, then:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

See if that pulls in the latest package patches for you. Then reboot:

$ sudo reboot

And let us know if the symptoms change. Please try to be as detailed as
possible.
