Start up 10.04

I put the 10.04 desktop cd in my drive. I get some symbol at the bottom 
that looks vaguely like a US Army advertisement tho too small to know 
anything. then, the Ubuntu red light district for a while.
Then, ' process 254: glib Warning get puiid_r()  failed due to unknown 
user id (0).'
Then nothing. I had hoped for installation. I have a dell b11000 that 
has installed everything back to red hat. Before fedora core anything.
Any ideas.
