I have one Mandriva machine which I do keep updated but find Ubuntu better for
what our office does. The Mandriva machine although fully up to date gets
little hands on use these days and mostly functions as a fax receiver and a
print server for the network. I originally moved from Fedora to Mandriva,
however when that machine quits, it will be replaced with Kubuntu like the
rest of the office now is.

What you are describing is a user flaw rather than a Ubuntu flaw! Someone who
needs a system for "critical day to day work" should be using the LTS
releases rather than the more unstable bleeding edge releases. By the time a
new LTS release comes around everything in it is pretty much rock solid.
Still, having said that, even the mid releases (those that come every six
months) are usually remarkably stable! I tend to upgrade my machines about a
month or so AFTER the LTS release and use only the LTS releases for work. I
do play with the other new releases on a "play" machine but surprisingly,
there is very little I find I really "need" from it for my LTS machines.
Ubuntu does a VERY good job of keeping LTS updated and solid and because of
my play machine I pretty much know what to expect from them and what is
coming!
