I wrote the following late last night describing how I got back my
volume icon which went missing. I suspect that it may help you with your
nm problem:
QUOTE
I don't know the full story as I haven't gone thru the process of
reproducing the process of how I lost the sound/volume icon and how I
got it back but for now I will only give a generalised picture of what
happened.
I deleted pulseaudio using Synaptic Package Manager - and I believe
that this is when I lost the volume icon.
Following the suggestions given in those archived posts and those in the
Ubuntu forum, I deleted, using Synaptic Manager-
indicator-messages
indicator-applet
This did not bring back the volume icon.
What I then did was to *re-install* both of these indicator-*, again
using Synaptic.
During the re-installation I noted that pulseaudio was also
re-installed. (So, there is a connection between the indicator-* and
pulseaudio.)
After the indicator-* were re-installed I ADDed to the top Panel the
"Indicator Applet" - and the volume icon re-appeared (together with the
empathy icon (these 2 are inseparable:-( ).
Do, I now have the volume icon back.
(But as a side-effect which came about with me fooling around with the
top panel is that I accidentally deleted the normal SHUTDOWN icon which
is installed by default. I replaced the icon using the ADD to Panel
option but the contents of the icon are NOT the same as in the original
:-( . Damn annoying when the goal posts keep shifting while the game is
being played:-( .)
