     Hard Drives are better now with the tiny platters and quick access. 
As for how many partitions and what kinds, it is simple. You can have 4 
primary partitions, period. Or you can make one primary partition a 
special large partition which holds up to I think about 10 
sub-partitions. They have names for each type but my experience has 
shown that sub-partitions are in every way as good as primary partitions.
