Symptomatically this resembles a problem that I encountered with kernels
around 2.6.8 to 2.6.12 or so. However that was definitely PPC-specific
(the fix, which I adapted from an earlier 2.4.x patch that was on the
internet, was enclosed within PBOOK related ifdefs). If it would be
useful to see what was going on with that I might be able to track down
the old bug reports (I don't recall if it was Debian or Ubuntu I was
using at that time).
