Ubuntu 10.02 goes either to blank screen, or command line with no network

Ubuntu List,

I reinstalled 9.10, and then upgraded to 10.04. I also attempted some of
the fixes described on this page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

My video card is a VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation
82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device.

My current situation is that every time I boot, I get a warning saying
that X didn't load (or something to that effect), and that I will have
to run Ubuntu in failsafe mode for this session.

However, so far as I can tell, "failsafe mode" is every bit as fast as
my graphics ever were. On some level, the graphics driver is working
fine, it just seems to want to warn me about it.

So, how can I get Ubuntu to stop giving me this warning and just go
ahead and run?
