I've got a similar problem. I just upgraded my Compaq Presario 2210US
laptop from 9.10 to 10.4. When booted with the default kernel, it is ok
until you get to the Ubuntu screen with the 5 horizontal dots in the
middle. Shortly after it gets there, the screen goes blank. A few
seconds after that, the entire system seems to freeze or crash (the sign
is that toggling the caps lock key doesn't toggle the caps lock light -
usually a sign of a crash or a system freeze).
My current workaround is to escape to Grub and boot with the previous
kernel from 9.10 (2.6.31-21-generic, I believe). I get a couple/three
error messages during bootup, but it does come up and appears to work.
I'm not sure if this is related to the KMS problem documented in the
release notes or not - I haven't checked that yet. If so, disabling KMS
(see the release notes) might help.
For what it's worth, lshw shows the display on this laptop as:
*-display:0
description: VGA compatible controller
product: 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 2
bus info: pci at 0000:00:02.0

resources: irq:10 memory:e8000000-efffffff(prefetchable)

Can anyone else speak to this?
