¡What`s up with firefox?

Since I did an update last time, my firefox (latest ubuntu version, 9.10)
have misbehaved badly. First, when starting it comes up a message saying
something like (from memory, so not exact wording) " one of firefox`s files
are being used by another application, so history and backtrace function
will not work" And indeed, they do not work! Also, some byttons within
firefox (those we click on) do not function , and do not result in any
action! For instance, the ubuntu google page do NOT work, while the original
googlwe.com page works! Also, in some blogs I cannot
post for this reason, while I can post in others. And I cannot enter
gmauil!!!!! (writing this on a windows machine, what a shame!)
¿¿¿ Any hints, workarounds or real solutions?
