I am guessing that what happened is that you opened an email in the
original thread, cleared out the contents and changed the subject and
sent that.  The problem with that is that even though you changed the
subject the headers of the email (which you do not normally see) still
included threading data that linked it to the original mail.  The more
sophisticated email apps use this data for threading so to those users
it appears that you hijacked the mail.  Other apps (such as gmail
unfortunately) just use the subject line for threading so to those
users it appears as a new thread.
