I have 2.6.31-21-generic (.59) w/nvidia-96 and it's working for me.
$ apt-cache policy linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic
linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic:
  Installed: 2.6.31-21.59
  Candidate: 2.6.31-21.59
  Version table:
 *** 2.6.31-21.59 0
$ apt-cache policy nvidia-glx-96
nvidia-glx-96:
  Installed: 96.43.13-0ubuntu6
  Candidate: 96.43.13-0ubuntu6
  Version table:

I didn't have to reload. However, you might try unloading from jocky
(System|Administration|Hardware Drivers|Remove and then reload from
same. You'll need to restart afterwards.

Note: It's also working on lucid kernel 2.6.32-17-generic. Now the
interesting part about the lucid install is that jockey states "This
driver is activated but to currently in use." I suspect that is because
I reloaded the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package & it's probably using
that one instead of xserver-xorg-video.nv. I'll check later.
