Grub2 and multiple boot different ubuntu versions

I suspect that the only "bits" of yours that a grub upgrade will keep are
/etc/default/grub
and
/etc/grub.d/40_custom
:(
For the memtest entries you could
chmod 644 /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86
and edit
/etc/grub.d/40_custom
to display one of the memory tests
