Wow Guys,
thanks for the gratifyingly quick responses to my plea...I have a few
clarifications for you to mull over. I do have a live CD but it's at
the  office and I will thus have to put off any cleaning until
tomorrow (since it's 10pm over here and I'm at home). I do have Simple
backup, but used it only once - after the initial karmic installation
and haven't done so since.
James, where do I enter those instructions...in the terminal? If so,
how do I get to the relevant directory?
Scott, how would I know which files are no longer needed in the /var directory?
I'm going to potter around desolately before turning in, with the hope
of seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel tomorrow.
Please accept my profound gratitude for your help....I do not take it
for granted.
