Yes, it'll work, but effect will be the same as his workaround to set 
default as '2' and will still need to update manually with every new 
kernel upgrade.

Colin, there is script crafted by Tom H which is replicated by Noop 
which may be helpful. Try checking out the old messages. But I think the 
use of 'start-up manager' as recommended by Noop may be the most 
'practical' though.

Sorry, all these issues does not affect me as I have a separate 'first 
grub' partition and it is not really disturbed by kernel upgrades of any 
OS or sequence of kernel listing, or indeed, of any OS being bombed out. 
But I understand where you're coming from.
