Gmail, as you say, is a service, so why not use an email program to
access the mail on the service? I use Claws-Mail, but you can use
Evolution (I've never tried so is an assumption) or Balsa. Or use
another browser such as Opera which has an in-built mail facility.
Firefox doesn't show this behaviour when I access Googlemail, so you
might just reinstall firefox to see if that cures the problem.
